Pool water-loss guide

Why Is My Pool Losing Water?

Some loss is normal in hot, windy weather. Repeated top-ups, a sudden drop or water loss that exceeds a comparison test can point to a leak in the shell, plumbing or equipment.

Try a simple bucket test

  1. Fill a bucket with pool water and place it securely on a pool step.
  2. Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool level outside it.
  3. Turn off automatic top-up systems and avoid using the pool.
  4. Compare both levels after about 24 hours.

If the pool drops noticeably more than the water inside the bucket, professional testing may be warranted.

Common warning signs

  • The pool needs frequent or constant top-ups
  • Water loss continues with the pump switched off
  • Wet soil, soft paving or unexplained moisture appears nearby
  • Air enters the system or the pump struggles to prime
  • Cracks, loose tiles or damaged fittings are visible

Three systems need to be separated

01

Pool shell

Cracks, joints, grout, lights, skimmers and underwater fittings.

02

Pipework

Suction, return, cleaner, spa and main-drain plumbing circuits.

03

Equipment

Pumps, filters, valves, unions and connections at the equipment pad.

04

Evaporation

Heat, wind, humidity, covers and pool use all affect normal loss.

What happens during professional testing?

We assess the loss pattern, inspect the equipment, isolate accessible plumbing lines for pressure testing and perform targeted underwater dye testing where required. The purpose is to identify the affected system before repairs begin.
